If the wait for the final season of Cobra Kai is killing you, look no further. Nestled in the eclectic neighbourhood of Marda Loop, Calgary MMA Gym, Silverback Martial Arts offers a variety of ways to move your body, including Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Goju Ryu Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Silverback Martial Arts students learn the basics of multiple martial arts forms.

Stepping into the easy-to-access Calgary Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness gym mats, you’ll discover more than just a place to train your body – you’ll find a community, a sanctuary, and a path to personal growth.

Led by experienced instructors Arek and Paul, the dojo has been helping Calgarians find a passion for martial arts for years, a passion Arek vividly remembers discovering at only 3 years old.

The Homegrown Collective sat down with Arek to learn more about Silverback Martial Arts, and how he is using his passion to fuel his community.

Where did the love for martial arts start for you?

Martial arts is all I’ve known. I’ve always found it to be so unique and gives you the ability to build your character in so many ways, inside and outside of the dojo and that’s what I really loved about it. Having my parents be involved with martial arts definitely helped ignite my passion as well. From them being martial artists themselves and growing up watching Bruce Lee movies and UFC fights, the spark was always there!

It is unique that you refer to the members as “partners.” Tell me about what this partnership means to you.

Our biggest thing with our members is to make sure that they feel very welcome in a safe and fun environment. We really strive to create a very close and tight-knit community and make everyone feel like we are a big family.

Silverback Martial Arts builds a family and a community of bad-assery.

Similarly to Homegrown, your fitness center is building a community around your gym, what kinds of initiatives or events do you host or plan to host to make this a reality?

We do events like fundraisers, and tournaments or have athletes competing, it’s the perfect time to come check them out and show some support for them and who knows, maybe it will spark some interest to start training and learning a new life skill as well!

Whether your interest in martial arts stems from the legacy of the great Bruce Lee, the nostalgia of the Karate Kid, or the sheer badassery displayed by Keanu Reeves in the John Wick franchise, Silverback’s doors are open to anyone who wants to step onto their mats.
